Range / Habitat

  • Occurs from Amchitka Island in the Aleutians south to La Jolla, California.
  • Found on rocky inshore areas and common in kelp beds. Also appears on sandy bottoms.

Physical Characteristics

  • Can grow to about 24 inches (61 cm) and weigh about 4.6 lbs. (2.1 kg).
  • Reported to live 12 years.

Diet / Feeding

  • Diet consists of crustaceans, polychaete worms, brittle sea stars, mollusks and small fish.

Reproduction / Growth

  • Spawns in late fall and winter months. Eggs are laid in clusters and are guarded by the male.

Conservation Status

  • “Not Evaluated” on the IUCN Red List.

Additional Information

  • Young is preyed upon by steelhead and salmon.
  • Frequently caught by sport fishermen from shore or skiff and it is often speared by divers.
